When Coaching is Not for You

Many people are writing about coaching. Many organizations are talking about coaching. As I have written in my "Leaders AND Coaches" blog post, some people think every leader must be and can be a coach. There is a lot of confusion around coaching. Today I set out to bring some clarity in a short blog post.

A coaching relationship can be transformational. I have experienced it as a client. I see it as a coach. However, coaching is not for everyone. Wait! Am I as a coach really saying that? Yes. Coaching may not be for you. Below are some reasons:

Coaching is not for you if:

  • You are looking for a fix

  • You have a fixed mindset

  • You will not invest in yourself

  • You are not curious

  • You are not willing to examine your actions

  • You are not willing to examine your thinking

If that describes you, coaching is not for you, at least not right now. However, if you have a growth mindset, coaching is for you. If you will invest in yourself, coaching is for you. If you are curious, coaching is for you. If you are ready to examine your thinking and your actions, coaching is for you. If any or all of those describe you, let’s connect to explore how coaching might benefit you.
